School Safety & Emergency Information

PLESD works closely with local emergency responders to prepare for a variety of situations. Learn how the District prepares, how families will receive updates, what to do during an emergency, and how students will be safely reunited with their families.
What Families Should Do During an Emergency
During an emergency, please:
- Remain calm and wait for official District or school instructions.
- Do not go directly to the school unless instructed to do so.
- Monitor ParentSquare and other official District communication channels for updates.
- Follow all directions provided by school staff and emergency responders.
- Do not call the school office unless specifically directed. Keeping phone lines available helps staff communicate with emergency personnel.
The safest response may vary depending on the situation. Students may remain at school, shelter in place, evacuate, or be moved to a designated reunification location.
Emergency Communication
PLESD will provide verified information and instructions through official District communication channels. Depending on the situation, updates may be shared through:

Student Release and Family Reunification
Students will remain under the supervision of school staff until public safety officials determine that it is safe to begin releasing students.
During an emergency:

Students will be released only to a parent, guardian, or authorized emergency contact listed in the student’s current school records.

Every adult picking up a student must present a valid photo ID.

Students will not be released to an individual who is not listed as an authorized contact.

The reunification location may be different from the student’s school.

Families should wait for official instructions before traveling to a school or reunification location.
Keeping emergency contacts current helps the District reunite students with their families safely and efficiently.
How PLESD Prepares
PLESD regularly reviews its emergency plans and works with local law enforcement, fire departments, and other emergency-response agencies. Staff and students participate in age-appropriate safety drills so they understand what to do during an emergency.
The specific response will depend on the situation and the direction of public safety officials.
Keep Your Contact Information Current
Parents and guardians should regularly review their contact information and authorized emergency contacts in the Aeries Parent Portal. Accurate information helps the District reach you quickly and release your child only to an approved adult during an emergency.
Report a Safety Concern
Students, families, and community members are encouraged to report concerns that may affect student or school safety.
Anonymous reporting is not monitored as an emergency service. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
