About Head Lice
Head lice are small insects that live on the scalp and are most common among preschool and elementary-age children. Having head lice is not related to personal cleanliness and can happen to anyone. Head lice do not spread disease, but treatment is recommended to prevent them from spreading to others.
What Families Should Look For
Knowing the common signs of head lice can help families identify and treat an infestation early.
- Frequent itching or tickling sensation on the scalp
- Lice or nits (eggs) found close to the scalp
- Irritation or sores caused by scratching
- Difficulty sleeping, as head lice may be more active in the dark
