What Parents and Guardians Can Do
You do not need to have all the answers. Open communication, clear expectations, and early support can make an important difference.
Keep Communication Open
-
Talk regularly with your child about alcohol, tobacco, vaping, prescription medication, and other substances.
-
Choose a calm and appropriate time for the conversation.
-
Listen carefully to what your child has to say and encourage honest communication.
Set Clear Expectations
-
Clearly communicate that underage alcohol, tobacco, vaping, and illegal drug use are not acceptable.
-
Establish consistent family rules and explain the reasons behind them.
-
Make sure your child understands the possible health, safety, academic, and legal consequences.
Model Healthy Choices
-
Remember that your habits and attitudes can influence how your child views alcohol, tobacco, and other substances.
-
Demonstrate healthy ways to manage stress, solve problems, and make responsible decisions.
Encourage Positive Activities
-
Help your child become involved in school activities, clubs, sports, hobbies, volunteer opportunities, or other positive interests.
-
Encourage friendships and activities that support healthy choices and a sense of belonging.
Respond Calmly to Concerns
-
If you suspect substance use, speak with your child when they are calm and not under the influence.
-
Focus on specific changes or behaviors you have observed.
-
Express concern without accusing, threatening, or judging.
-
Give your child an opportunity to explain what may be happening.
Seek Support
-
Do not wait to ask for help if you are concerned.
-
Contact your child’s school counselor, school psychologist, administrator, or another trusted staff member.
-
Consider speaking with a healthcare provider or qualified substance-use professional for additional guidance and support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do these warning signs mean my child is using alcohol or drugs?
How should I talk with my child if I am concerned?
Who should I contact if my family needs help?
Not necessarily. Many warning signs may also be related to stress, health concerns, changes in development, difficulties at school, or other challenges. Look for ongoing patterns or significant changes rather than relying on one behavior alone.
Choose a calm, private time to talk. Share the specific changes you have noticed, listen carefully, and avoid accusations or judgment. Keeping communication open can make it easier for your child to be honest and ask for help.
Contact your child’s school counselor, school psychologist, or administrator for school-based support. You may also contact PLESD Student Services at (530) 743-4428, Ext. 1743 for assistance and additional resources.
